| Hopefully the scapes will have a kick as well! |
This week, the killing frost hit the garden. It truly was time as things were winding down anyhow, but the frost was a bit of a bummer when it happened. We were both down with some sort of a virus, so we didn't get to pick the last of the cherry tomatoes. Ah well. That is life.
My garlic arrived and I'm quite excited to try these varieties. I chose Korean Red, Duganski and Metechi. All of them are hard neck varieties and all should pack some heat. The Metechi is supposed to have a "sharp bite with hot spice" and is one of the hottest garlics. It also has good yield. Duganski has a "bold firey flavor" that is supposed to mellow as it lingers on the taste buds. It grows in most climates but really is supposed to shine in southern climates. It also stores well. I got it mostly for my Fire Cider and storage - even though I'm not in the South. Hopefully it will still do well for us. Lastly, is the Korean Red. It is supposed to be hot and spicy with a citrusy undertone. When cooked, it mellows out and gives a deep and rich, sweet flavor. We will be testing these and replanting those we like. There are so many different varieties, we will be definitely be testing more!
